Penn State Safe & Aware

Chapter 2

Be safe when drinking

Alcohol affects your ability to make decisions. It slows down the way the brain functions and impairs judgment. Most reported cases of sexual assault on college campuses involve alcohol use either by the perpetrator or the victim. This is also true for sexual assault cases at Penn State.

Sexual assault can happen to anyone, regardless of biological sex, age, race, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

Safety Tips:

  • Practice drinking safety.
Get your own drinks, don’t accept an open drink from anyone, and don't let your drink out of your sight. Be cautious about drinking from an open source.
  • Have a sober friend with you and your group.
Watch out for your friends and step in if you see something to assist a friend who might need help.
  • Stay with trusted friends.
Don’t walk home alone or with someone you just met. Only walk home with other students that you know well and trust.
